Ghazal for Peace : Mihir Chitre

Mihir Chitre is a poet and writer from India. The selected poem is from his recent book titled School of Age (Dhauli Books, 2019).

Empathy has just died on Twitter

We have violently lied on Twitter

They, who're targeted today,

Your retweet is their cyanide on Twitter.

Lynching anyone with a dagger of accusations

Truth is often mystified on Twitter.

A lifetime reduced to 140 characters

Nuance commits suicide on Twitter

A man compensates for an inferiority complex

And calls for a religious genocide on Twitter

A woman questions Qasab's death sentence

But can't forgive a flirt caught offside on Twitter.

Trading secrets for backstage business deals

Like revolutionaries we collide on Twitter.

"Apologise for your gender"; "Muslims go to Pakistan";  #AlwaysBelieveHer:

Performative stances are glorified on Twitter

Either black or white from either left or right

How will extremism subside on Twitter?

Each person is a courtroom in themselves

You, my friend, have nowhere to hide on Twitter.
