Eid, Diwali, Christmas: Jhilam Chattaraj

Educator, poet, author, Jhilam Chattaraj is presently working as an Assistant Professor at R.B.V.R.R Women’s College, Department of English, Hyderabad, India. She has authored two books: Corporate Fiction: Popular Culture and the New Writers (2018) by Prestige Books International and the poetry collection When Lovers Leave and Poetry Stays (2018), Authorspress, New Delhi. Her academic and creative writings have been published in national and international journals like Cha-An Asian Literary JournalWorld Literature Today and Frontier Poetry. The poems, 'Christmas,' and another version of 'Diwali,' have been previously been published in the anthology, Redemptive Musings, Ed. Dr Bina Singh, Hawakal Publishers, Kolkata, 2019.

Ramzaan-

Boys on a train

thrown, beaten, butchered -why ?

Lights, prayers, silks, scars- all remain,

but them

 

 

Diwali, 2018

Sparks lift

a city’s soul.

Fire embroidered sky, kneels

by a child lighting his father’s

last breath

 

Christmas, 1994

Carols,

one town of ash

and steel. Sunlit mouths wait

for a woman in a red suit.

Plum fog
