UNTITLED: TANUSHREE GHOSH

Tanushree Ghosh is an Assistant Professor of English at University of Nebraska at Omaha. She has a PhD from Syracuse University. She is working on a monograph dealing with the visual representation of suffering in late-Victorian and colonial literature and culture and the possibilities of witnessing. The “Untitled Poem” is her attempt to bear witness to the suffering and death of the 2012 Delhi rape victim and an attempt to acknowledge the countless, nameless women, who struggle against oppression and violence in India.

Do not rest in peace
Haunt us everyday, every waking moment
Pierce our consciousness with your screams of pain
Remind us continuously of your bloody, disemboweled self
Seep into us through the pores of our skin
And cut us from within like millions of razor blades
Do not let your story end with the public homage to the tragic
Live on and oppress us with the realization of our impotence
The exorcism of action awakes in our restless frenzy

The poem is a promise to remember, not to memorialize.
